Amy Linden's review was spot on about the over use of the term "Classic" & she was also spot on when stating that that doesn't apply here. The album has a flow to it where one song perfectly leads into the next telling the story of the film almost without having to see the film. Every artist has that album that you think of when you hear mention of there name, whether its your personal favorite or not, this was the one for Mr. Mayfield was the single most under-apprecicated artist of all time. And he had released 3 fantastic albums prior to Superfly being "Curtis", "Roots" & "Curtis Live". But, this is the one that would stamp his place in music history. One of the things most impressive is that most other soundtracks had a signature song (ex. This is, without question, one of the most incredible albums ever to be released & truly solidified Curtis Mayfield's true genius.He had already been a certified star with the Impressions who are one of the most under-appreciated groups of all time. His lyrics, music compositions & vocals and the combination of the 3 were as impressive as anyone in music history & i'd put his albums up against any artist & the Impressions albums up against any groups in any genre from any time period.I remember when this album & the movie were released how it rocked mainstream america and the music and politial world period.
Mayfield.This album has so many highlights it's almost impossible to state them all in a review. Shaft) & the rest of the album would be mostly instrumental, not Superfly.With the exception of 2 fabulous instrumental pieces, every other song had lyrical content. You'd hear these songs everywhere, from schools to radio and whole sermons in church's would be preached against the film & what it was perceived to stand for. This is my favorite Curtis Mayfield album hands down. The tracks on this album is right on. He really layed it out on this soundtrack for the movie. He was as real as real could get about the street life and the drug dealer and just the whole infrastructure of the street life and the players within the game. A must have. That's all I have to say.

There isn't a note that doesn't belong here. And I've concluded. Best album of 1972. 1972 was a great year for music. This is one of the lucky ones.
And for ten bucks. Recorded music has a long history of producing a truckload of great albums, but a select few have the honor of being called absolutely PERFECT. A steal.There's two types of people in the world - those who love Curtis Mayfield and those who aren't familiar with him yet. This album will calm and rev you up at the same time. I've tried. 37 minutes of glorious musical nirvana.Superfly is an indelible part of my life.
Not only does this album represent the peak of his career, it's also one of the Top 5 soul/R&B/funk albums of all time. It's got that kind of magic. Along with the music of Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley and lots of other greats, I couldn't imagine going through life without the privilege of having direct access to it. Unfortunately I cannot say I enjoyed my purchase.In fact I've paid for it but I received my CD literally in pieces.Although the package showed no sign of damage when I opened the package the CD was broken.So far I have not received any reimburse for my loss.Antonio Carlos Barros
